Derbi says goodbye….

Hi all, today’s blog post about the life of a scooter named Derbi will be my last…..

For both Anthony and I, the last 2 years have been an amazing experience, we’ve travelled over 20,000 Km together, ridden and photographed lots of cool roads and shared some awesome days and nights out on the road.

We have also shared great rides with Vicki, (aka Scooter Girl), and I will greatly miss her amazing smile.  She is, (and always will be…), Derbi’s Greatest Celibrity Pillion Passenger.

But for Anthony and Vicki, two wheeled adventures will continue, not on a scooter, but on a Suzuki V-Strom 650 motorbike, yes folks, he’s crossed over to the other side and is loving the new challenges that await….

There will be a new blog with stories of his adventures at – Two Wheeler

Sharing my stories with you has been an absolute pleasure, thanks to all who have commented and followed the “My Life As A Scooter” journey. I may meet some of you again one day, but for now, and for the final time…….stay safe, have fun, keep the rubber side down, and enjoy the ride.

Cheers

Derbi.

Its tuesday, and it was fun!!!

Hi everyone,

Welcome to another week on two wheels.  This morning’s ride was great….the temperature was perfect, there were no Grey Nomads in their Land Cruisers or Patrols towing their Jayco’s out of town…..and it was great to be out on the road.

And coming home was awesome too, Anthony had a long day of training at work today, and so his brain was pretty fried by the time he walked out the back door of the office, but as soon as that helmet was on and the iPod was cranking, all was right with the world and off we went.  And it was a great ride home.

Each corner was taken with precision and determination.  Yes, the road is not a race-track, but each day there is a chance to make the most of each turn and enjoy the road.   Anthony’s ability is increasing all the time, and to be able to help him with that is so great.

Also over the weekend Vicki had a wedding that she shot in Yamba, and one of the groomsmen was a motorcycle drag racer – but not just any drag racer, he’s a world land speed record holder and recorded a record speed at the Bonneville Salt Flats during Speed Week 2009…….yep this guy got his Suzuki up to a speed of 212.404mph (339.84 kmh) – and he is one of only 4 people on the planet to have broken the 200mph barrier on a 750cc bike in the past 60 years.  Well done to Greg Watters.

So that’s it so far for this week….i’m sure we’ll have more stories to tell soon.  Stay safe, keep the rubber side down and have fun!!

Cheers

Derbi.

This week’s winner(s) of Derbi’s Celebrity Pillion Passenger of the Week are a group of  four women and part of one of the most popular products out there in the world of motor-sport….

We have previously featured girls who are at the very pinnacle of their profession (the girls of the Rizla Suzuki MotoGP team) but this week we have another group of girls who’s team is one of the sponsors of the Mercedes Petronas team ……yes the team that 7-time world champion Michael Schumacher is now a member of.

Anthony is a fan of the product they represent and the people they sponsor – whether its Schuey’s team, Chad Reed’s Kawasaki Supercross team, Ken Block’s WRC car…….or anything else that they are a part of.

These girls represent a great product and so today we present the girls from Monster Energy….

Inspired…yep I sure am!!!!

Hi All,

Today’s commute was one of the best ever – simply for the fact that after being off the road for almost two weeks, I was back out there once more and loving it!!

It was a cooler morning than we have had previously, but it was so great to get out and enjoy the corners, the straights, the speed zone changes, even some of the familiar bumps and ruts in the road…….it was just great to have the rubber side down once more and be out there enjoying all that the ride has to offer.

And here I am, one sunny afternoon……I love this photo and the way it has been edited (unlike the “editing” that Anthony did recently while playing with a photo app that produced some pretty hideous results!!)

Vicki produced this shot for Anthony for a chance at getting me on the coveted “Photo Of The Day” spot on bikepics.com  – Unfortunately we didn’t get there, but its one of the many shots of me that I absolutely love.

Her work is simply amazing…..and there are times in your life that you meet people who add something to your life, and then there are times when you meet people who not only add something, but enrich your life in ways you never thought possible.

Inspiring, captivating, talented, driven, determined…..all words that are used to describe her work……..she can see what truly exists beyond the lens, with an ability to capture the emotions, the details, the unspoken moments……….the overflowing smiles from a loving groom waiting for his bride, the kiss from a proud father as he gives away his daughter, the visible outpouring of love between two people as they share a tender moment upon a sandy beach under a setting sun, or sit beneath a forest tree illuminated by magical afternoon light………

All of these elements provide the setting for works of art – moments in time when technique meets talent, style meets flair, and a deep love of photography and passion to be the best, produces the end result……pure visions of life, love and laughter….. all captured and immortalised – forever!!!

Vicki James is that photographer…..a gifted woman with the experience and ability to make your wedding day or portrait session all that you could hope for and more.

Anthony’s admiration for her work, her ability, and her passion, combined with his deep love for her as his partner in life is endless and boundless.    Vicki, we love you and all that you do.

So that’s it from me today…….The chance to be back out on the road again in the morning is so exciting…..Enjoy your rides this week everyone……Enjoy not just the ride, but the destination, the journey, the sun, the rain, the music, the laughter…….get out there and go for it…..

Take care and be safe!!

Cheers

Derbi.

And so we come to this week’s winner of Derbi’s Celebrity Pillion Passenger – who has been featured before, but that was almost two years ago.

She is a founding member of rock band Evanescence (one of Anthony’s favourites, and a selection of their tracks are featured on his “Riding Music” playlist).  She has a recognizable fashion style, marked by her occasional use of Gothic make-up and taste for Victorian-styled clothing.  Anthony has had the chance to see Evanescence perform live on two occasions, and considers the tracks “Bring Me To Life”, “My Immortal”, “My Last Breath” (all from “Fallen”) and “Call Me When You’re Sober”, “Lithium”, “Like You” and “Good Enough” (from “The Open Door”) to be among his favourites.  Notable side projects include the hit “Broken” with Seether and Korn’s “Freak On A Leash” from their MTV unplugged performance.   She is known officially as Mrs Amy Hartzler, but to her fans, she will always be the one and only, Amy Lee.

Get up, Get out, Have fun!!!!

Hi everyone,

It’s been a bit of a quiet time for me for the last couple of weeks……I have been off the road for a bit and looking forward to getting back out there next week!!!

We Googled “great motorbike rides australia” recently and number two search was IronChef’s “Motorcycle Paradise” Checkout his site – it’s awesome!!

One popular bike around the net at the moment is the Ducati Multistrada 1200.  Hell For Leather Magazine featured a story recently about the Ducati that got binned by a journalist who was testing the bike off road….not pretty!!  The Ducati seems to be awesome in Urban, Sport and Touring riding modes, but whether its Enduro mode allows it to be a true competitor for the BMW GS1200 Adventurer or the new Yamaha ZTZ Super Tenere 1200 remains to be seen….

Here’s a shot of it from the recent Gold Coast Motorcycle Expo….Personally I think it’s a sweet looking bike….

This example was shipped out especially from Italy for the expo….well done to Ducati Australia to organise that.

Today its also time to say G’day to a fellow two-wheeler who’s not only a great guy, but he also knows the best beers and where to find them!! …..but most importantly he’s is Anthony’s brother!  So let’s give it up for Gavin and his Suzuki GS500….Gavin moved from a 50cc Daelim scooter to the Suzuki last year.  It’s a sweet looking ride…(and Anthony is absolutely itching to have a go on it!!)  Have an awesome day tomorrow Gav – you are awesome dude!!!

While scouring through the photos on the Mac recently, I came across the following one.  It was taken by Vicki one fine Sunday afternoon when we were out for a ride around the southern end of the Gold Coast.  This shot was taken up on the hill above Kirra point.  The camo-clad guy chilling out in the background under the Rusty Eagle is Anthony, and I’m loving the way that I look in this shot….Vicki, you are so incredible, and your photography, your talent and creativity and your ability to capture images and emotions is truly awesome, inspiring and a work of art…. We love you!!!!

So that’s it from me this week, have a good one and we’ll see you out there soon…..

This weeks winner of Derbi’s Celebrity Pillion Passenger is an American NCAA Basketball player and 2006 American Idol Finalist. She is the daughter of a US Senator, and TV reporter.    She has been an actress, she is the 6th highest basketball scorer in Massachusetts basketball history, (male or female).  She is 21 years old, and has a NICE pair of boots….she is Ayla Brown.

Bikes, Bikes and more Bikes…..It’s the Australian Motorcycle Expo 2010

Friday……

Its going to be a great weekend…Gold Coast trip!!  On Saturday Anthony and Vicki will be off to the Australian Motorcycle Expo at the Gold Coast Convention Centre and I’ll be at ScooterHQ getting a new tyre!

(…..and don’t forget to checkout Vicki’s website and blog.  Her work is fantastic, inspiring, brilliant, artistic, awesome, beautiful and absolutely incredible….)

Today we had to travel to office number two instead of the tiny office, Anthony had a chance to listen to more music, and today’s tracks cranking on the iPod were – Linkin Park – New Divide, Honeymoon Suite – What Does it Take, Megan McCauley – Wonder, and Dishwalla – Counting Blue Cars…..

The weather was a bit cooler and it was a perfect morning for a ride. It started raining later in the day, but hopefully the weekend will be fine.

So it’s now Friday night…and I’m all tied down on the trailer waiting for the trip up the coast in the morning……yes it would have been better to ride up, but due to the lack of rubber on my rear tyre, Anthony decided to get me up there the safe way!   So I’m looking forward to monday and the trip to Grafton for Anthony to go to work.

Saturday…..

We have been here on the Gold Coast since this morning…..I’m all fixed up and have a shiny new rear tyre, and am ready to hit the road…..but unfortunately I’m currently sitting on a trailer in a hotel carpark while Scooterboy and ScooterGirl are enjoying their weekend, but they have worked hard and are thankful for some time away….and after hanging out at the motorcycle expo, Anthony has some photos that he’d like to post….so here they are….

BMW K1300R

Suzuki Gladius SFV650

Fully optioned custom Harley Davison

Big Bear Customs chopper

Ducati Troy Bayliss 1098r Limited Edition

Ducati Streetfighter

the new Ducati Mulistrada 1200

The incredibly expensive Ducati Desmocedici RR

Victory Arlen Ness signature series cruiser.

the awesome Triumph Street Triple R

An accessorised Triumph Street Triple.

the mighty 1700cc Yamaha VMAX

the all-new BMW S1000RR superbike.

The show wasn’t as good as last year….there were some manufacturers not represented, and the crowd didn’t seem to be as big, but Anthony enjoyed hanging out with all the two wheeled toys.

Sunday…..

Its sunday morning and I’m still sitting here in the hotel carpark, but today at some time we are heading home. Scooterboy and Scootergirl have had a great time away, and I’m looking foward to the week ahead….

And now it’s sunday night, and we are home….I’m off the trailer, locked in the garage, and ready to hit the road tomorrow morning…Bring it on!!!

This week’s winner of Derbi’s Celebrity Pillion Passenger of the Week is a musician….but not just any musician, she’s a singer, songwriter, amazing guitarist and was to be the lead guitarist for Michael Jackson’s comeback tour.  She first opened for her hero Steve Vai at the age of 15, she’s 24 now and she is Orianthi Panagaris.

Great morning for a ride in the country……

Howdy everyone,

Riding this week has been lots of fun.  We’ve had trips up the highway to office no. 1, a few rides to office no. 2, and then we finished off the week at the tiny office…..but it’s been all good fun.

Also this week I’ve noticed some looks from people around town who stare at me and go….what is that?  Is it a scooter, or a bike???   We got some fuel one day and a guy filling his ute up with fuel seemed totally amazed at the two-wheeled machine in front of him….yes, I’m a scooter, but I’m sexy and I sound great too!   I’m built with motorcycle engineering, twist and go simplicity, cool styling and great performance.

Today we had a great ride.  We headed out of town on Yamba road, out to Harwood then down the highway a bit, then out to Ashby Heights, Ashby and Chatsworth.    It was a great ride on a new bit of road.  Anthony had been out there in the car at one time, but had never been there on two wheels, so it was great to share a new piece of bitumen with him.

The map of our ride looks like this….

And here are some pics of the trip…..

Here I am out on Watts Lane…..its so quiet and peaceful out there.

What Derbi ride would be complete without a photo of a corner trailing off in the distance…..

Looking back at where we’ve been….

Suddenly the Ashby Heights road got a bit ugly….. time to turn around!

The view as we headed back to Ashby….there were virtually no cars out there.

And this is the view back down the hill….

Yet another long straight ending in a corner to somewhere…..

And the award for “Best corner followed by long straight” goes to this road of Ashby.   This was coming out of the 50kmh zone…..it would have been great to turn around, head back into the village and then come back and hit this corner “properly”.

Having a quick stop on the side of the road once more….was such a great morning to be out riding.

And here’s a final shot showing me (of course) and a glimpse of the beautiful weather….

Some of the tracks cranking on the iPod for today’s trip were……Brand New Day – Ryan Star, Dancing In The Storm – Boom Crash Opera,  New Divide – Linkin Park, Emerald City – Simon Garnder, Fine – Crimson Room, Damn You – Steve Vai……..and the list goes on and on.

Hopefully you have all had a great week with awesome rides.  So get out there and enjoy the sun, stay safe and we’ll see you next week.

And so that brings us to the winner of Derbi’s Celebrity Pillion Passenger of The Week who is a Tennis player from Russia.  She is a former world no.1, and at the age of 6 she left  her life of poverty and with her family headed to the USA.

She won her first Grand Slam title at Wimbledon at the age of 17.   Beyond Tennis she has been featured in Sports Illustrated, she was the most searched for Athlete on Yahoo! in 2005 and 2008 and in July 2008 was the worlds highest paid female athlete, earning US$26 Million!

This month she signed an 8 year deal with Nike for $70 Million, dwarfing the previous record ($43 Million held by Venus Williams)  She is Maria Sharapova.

Special mention (as always….) goes out this week to our favourite pillion passenger EVER!!! She is the hardest working, most amazing, and completely incredible photographer, the one and only Vicki James.  She has recently attended the Jasmine Star workshop in Sydney and she is on fire with work at the moment.  With blogging, editing, photo shoots and weddings….its all happening and the end result is truly stunning.

To say that Anthony loves and adores her is an understatement….  To say that we love her work, and that we are in awe of her ability is just the beginning…….quite simply…Vicki James rocks!!!!   To watch her work, and to support her and her passion, is a privilege for Anthony and he is so proud of her and what she is achieving with her work. Yep, there is so much love for her!!

She is an Artist in ever sense of the word.  Both of us are lifetime members of the Vicki James Appreciation Society and can’t get enough of her work….So for all your photography needs, whether its Weddings or portraits – contact Vicki!

Merry Christmas!!

Hi all,

Just wanted to wish everyone a Merry Christmas, and a Happy and safe New Year.    We hope you enjoy 2010 and get out there and make the most of every moment.

This year has been a busy one, and for Anthony it involved a move south to be with Vicki.  For them it meant a new job, new challenges and new experiences that could be shared without having to travel a 360km round trip each week to do so.

For me that meant new roads and new opportunities to get out and have some fun on the roads.  We’ve discovered plenty of roads that we love riding on, and also have some that we are looking forward to checking out soon.

We have two winners of Derbi’s Celebrity Pillion Passenger of the week this week……The first is from the UK. She’s a model who was born in Feltham.  Her  mother is an accountant, her father an engineer.   While growing up she had a passion for dance and drama and studied them both at Feltham Community College.  She is Katie Marie Cork

But the true winner, and Derbi’s preferred passenger above all….is and will always be, a girl who is the most amazing photographer I’ve ever met.

She specialises in weddings and portraits and is just so incredible at what she does.

With her eyes, her hands, her creativity, and her tools, she is able to capture priceless moments and transform those moments into a work of art.   She is a hard working mum, she is a gifted, generous, intelligent, funny and beautiful woman.

…….she is the love of Anthony’s life, and he is so blessed and thankful to have her, she is the one and only Vicki James.
